Song of the Day and Lyrics – The Gauntlet (Demon Hunter) from Self-Titled

The original Demon Hunter (Band Pic, Self-titled Debut Album)

Demon Hunter's self-titled debut album band pic from the back cover.

The Gauntlet by Demon Hunter, lyrics included below, from their Self-titled debut album (2002) is probably one of their most overlooked and underappreciated songs ever. The piece is REALLY unique for the band, as there is nothing else they’ve recorded that is quite like it.

If you enjoy this article and song please like it at the top of the website and share it on Facebook and Twitter, I’d greatly appreciate it! And leave a comment if you’re so inclined. :)

The song is played extremely slow, and is a “ballad” (what the band calls their “slow” songs), but has a kind of menacing quality to it that is very interesting indeed. A sense of depression pervades from beginning to end. Overall it is one of my favorite Demon Hunter tracks, and is one of their longest songs, clocking in at nearly seven minutes. I love the drums at the end, by far my favorite part of the song.

The Gauntlet Lyrics:

I hold you in…
Feel you like… the last beautiful…TOUCH…
Before a final REST
I know I’ll see you forever…
I want it painted BLACK AND RED

It’s so beautiful to me…
It is everything I see…..
It’s so beautiful to me…
But it’s nothing that I NEED

And I can’t taste… anything less….
Every time I’m forced DOWN

To be with yourself…
Take all the blood you WANT
But not me….from here…..

It’s so beautiful to me…
It is everything I see…..
It’s so beautiful to me…
But it’s nothing that I NEED

Not a HAND
not a FINGER….

This is my HOME
I’m dying HERE

I hide in the CORNER….

That look on your FACE…

Behind the Song – The Gauntlet (By Ryan Clark, lead vocalist of Demon Hunter and writer of all their material)
“This song is about holding onto something despite the harmful effects it may have on your life. It paints a picture of growing accustomed to something to the degree that it manifests itself into an action of second nature. Some things that we do consistently, we become numb to. This song speaks about realizing the destructive power of these things, and taking action to become effected by them once again.” – Ryan Clark, Demon Hunter
