In this installment of my Resident Evil 2 Podcast series, I tackle Claire’s first Scenario (Claire A) on Normal difficulty attempting to beat it without using a single Healing Item for my Master Run at the game! I will use neither Herbs nor First-Aid Sprays!

A “Master Run” is defined as Mastering the game by performing a feat for you own enjoyment that is difficult in a way that is outside the normal confines of the game. As such, unlockables, rankings or difficulty settings are all a normal and natural part, and must be beaten/tackled in order to consider a game “Complete” (that is, you have “finished” every part of the game). A Master Run however goes beyond that and is a made-up way to make a game artificially harder, more complex, or a self-created feat that few attempt.

For example, you could beat Zelda: Ocarina of Time or a Metroid game with only three Heart Tanks/Energy Tanks. To play the game normally you are supposed to collect these, but by artificially limiting yourself in the health area, the game is made much more difficult. That is an example of a Master Run (per Backloggery dot com) and that is what I’m attempting for Resident Evil 2 by beating it without using a single Health Item!

Originally I was attempting to do this without Saving once as well, but I quickly tossed that idea out of the window… You’d have to be INSANE to attempt THAT!

I am playing the GameCube version of Resident Evil 2 on my Wii.

I’ve “Mastered” two other games so far, I Mastered Resident Evil Remake and Super Mario Land. I hope to add more games to my list soon. :D

In this first installment of my Resident Evil 2 Podcast series, I tackle Leon’s first Scenario (Leon A) on Normal difficulty and play all the way through the game. There’s also lots of commentary throughout. I am playing the GameCube version of Resident Evil 2 on my Wii.

Next up I’ll be recording a “Master Run” of Resident Evil 2 as I try my hand at beating the game without using a single Healing Herb! I’ll give my self some leniency in the first attempt through by saving often in case I do die.

If I can succeed once, then I’ll play through the other scenarios (there are four total, Leon A, Leon B, Claire A, Claire B) without saving at all OR using an Herb! In order to actually “Master” it, I’ll need to beat all four scenarios without using a single Herb! And I plan on doing so without saving on three of them.

Should be pretty tough! :D But I’m definitely looking forward to it!

ListenToMePlayGames Super Metroid Podcast Part 1 of Metroid 3

Hopefully if they ever remake Super Metroid, it’ll look like this!

ListenToMePlay Super Metroid in part 1 of my podcast that takes you through one of the greatest games ever made, and one of the Super Nintendo’s pinnacle’s of design mastery.

Super Metroid is the third-entry in Samus Aran’s space bounty hunting adventures (following the original Metroid 1 for NES released in 1986 and Metroid 2 for Game Boy, released in 1991), and takes everything the series was ever known for to the next levels. Visuals, graphics, music, audio, ambiance, mood, gameplay, bosses, levels, design…. everything has been taken up a million notches and represents one of the finest action games ever conceived. The smooth action shooting gameplay and platform flipping acrobatics are unmatched, and the open-ended design, girth of well-hidden secret Items, awesome Weapons, secret techniques, multiple endings and speed-run-begging gameplay compel you to cheer at how amazing everything comes together.

ListenToMePlayGames The Witcher 2 Podcast Part 2

ListenToMePlay The Witcher 2 (Xbox 360) as I jump back into the game headfirst from the main village tutorial area that I left off during the first Podcast. Be sure to check that out if you haven’t already!

This episode takes us much, much further into The Witcher 2, as we play through all of the very long prologue scenes as Geralt is being interrogated in a prison. I never played the first Witcher, so I don’t know if this is telling the story of the last game or continuing from the last game’s ending or not… Either way, we learn a lot more about the escapades of Geralt, as we take place in a castle assault and protect a king, face-off against a giant, hungry dragon; watch a slow-motion-tinged assassination, hunt for ingredients and money through a castle town under siege as save survivors and innocent villagers, make our way through zombie-infested sewers, explore a temple, hypnotize a Priest, and start our escape from said prison. We also learn a TON of backstory, Level-Up our character, explore alchemy (for which I get a basic Achievement).

This, sadly, actually marks my first-ever Western RPG that I’ve played and my FIRST EVER open-world game.

In this introductory installment, I will dive into CDProjektRED’s recent “The Witcher 2”, released for Xbox 360 on April 17th, 2012; after being available on PC since May of 2011. This is the first time developer CDProjekt has released a console title EVER, and is the first Witcher game to be released on a console system. CDProjekt decided to go for converting the second game to consoles, instead of the first Witcher. Hopefully they’ll still bring that title over as well.

This first installment of ListenToMePlay The Witcher 2 has me discussing the sad fact that I’ve never, EVER played an open-world game or even a Western RPG, nor many of the biggest videogames of modern times (like Morrowind, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, etc., all of which I’ve never played); as well as the fact that I am a complete virgin to The Witcher series, having never played the original game. After my long, opening diatribe, we finally pop the game in my long-dormant Xbox 360 (which hasn’t been used for about 10 months) and finally load the game up.

We watch the absolutely awesome introduction, play through the very long tutorial (which I suck mightily at and have extreme difficulty learning the basic controls) before eventually playing through the very beginning sections of the game and exploring the opening area following the prologue (after you enter the Arena tutorial). I also get to witness the first fully nude woman in a videogame I’ve ever seen, including fully developed breasts and pubic hair shown in their full glory… boy games have come a long way, eh. :P

My brother, Red Winged Angel, joins me as well, and offers a few comments as I play. Overall, I hope you enjoy and look forward to more as I continue to play through the game on audio, and look forward to my review once I complete The Witcher 2!

ListenToMePlayGames Resident Evil Remake Podcast (Guest: MyDad)

ListenToMePlayGames with “MyDad” as we dive into Resident Evil Remake for the Nintendo GameCube. One of my favorite games of all time. All in celebration of Resident Evil 6 releasing on October 2nd!

ListenToMePlayGames will be a new feature where I will record audio of me playing through a game, along with commentary from me and whoever else is joining in. In this instance it is my dad, someone who has never played a game in his life and doesn’t know a single thing about videogames. I hope that this will become a neat way to experience gaming, and turn out much like a radio show. If you’ve played the game before, you will be able to picture what is going on onscreen even though you can’t see it, and I think it will be a very unique experience!

With dad joining in, I think this will be an interesting feature and an interesting experiment to see what the average parent of a 20-something thinks about actually watching someone play a videogame from start to finish (my dad turns 60 next month). I chose Resident Evil Remake because, outside of it being an excellent game, it’s also fun to watch and is a game that I’ve always wanted my dad to see. I think it’s an excellent example of a cinematic experience because of the awesome cinematography and outstanding mood, ambiance and sense of dread that pervades the game’s wonderfully designed environments.

This debut episode was meant to be a trial or practice run, so we just start chatting right off the bat as I load the Wii up, before I even pop Resident Evil Remake in. Because it was meant to be a practice run, I think the chatting between me and my dad is much more natural, and we just start immediately talking about videogames, about what dad remembers from our childhood, about what certain things he sees onscreen mean, and he constantly peppers me with questions. Which is just how I wanted it. I also do a TON of explaining, naturally. I think most gamers will find it a fascinating time.

Due to the trial nature, there’s no intro really, we just kinda start talking and go from there. Before I put Resident Evil: Remake in, I start off with Zelda: Twilight Princess which I was using to test the mic. And that morphs into a pretty interesting conversation in and of itself. Dad gets a little tired by the end of my Resident Evil playing, but I think this first episode turned out pretty great overall. Enjoy.
