Okay guys and gals, time for something completely different: Guilty Pleasure Song of the Day.

Guilty Pleasure Song #1 – Rush By Aly & AJ

If you’ve kept track of my Song of the Day articles, you’ve probably noticed by now that my main affinity lies with Christian metal, as well as a sprinkling of Rap & Hip-Hop. In actuality I am a HUGE metal fan and that’s almost all I listen to. I am a true headbanger. But I also love rap music and I listen to a lot of Christian rap as well.

What else do I listen to? My guilty pleasure is actually the bubbliest kind of pop known to man. I’m talking about stuff like Hillary Duff, The Spice Girls and yes, Aly & AJ. Maybe it’s because of my younger sister who used to have all of these bubbly preteen pop albums, and one day I decided to pop one in and listen to it and I enjoyed it. From then on I’ve found it kinda easy to like a lot of the preteen girl pop out there. In addition to a few more “normal” pop albums like Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne and Stacie Orico.

So my guilty pleasure is definitely, without a doubt. Pop music. I still stay away from certain heavily secular songs, so a lot of modern-day pop like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, doesn’t appeal to me. I think one of things that I enjoy about the preteen pop is the innocence of it. Stuff like Britney Spears literally makes me wanna gag. Or Christina Aguillera and her uber-sexual song like Dirrty. Ugh. Really? REALLY. Grown ups actually listen to that, eh? Of course they don’t, I’m sure it’s all teenage boys, but that song was NOMINATED for “Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals” at the 45th Grammy Awards. And yes that’s why I don’t listen to much secular music. Case closed.

Sooooo, that leads me to… Aly & AJ. Who are now known as “78violet” (and are both Christians I might ad, like the Jonas Brothers). I must confess that most of my Guilty Pleasure stuff are more individual songs than albums and I usually haven’t followed the artist after the album. With a few exceptions. But its not like Demon Hunter, Becoming the Archetype or The Showdown where I own each and every album and know every single song and the accompanying lyrics and listen to them all the time. Having said that, I have nothing against picking up more of the stuff from these artists, its just that I haven’t.

Rush is the first track and title song of the album “Into the Rush” (Released on August 16, 2005) by Aly & AJ (now known as 78Violet). The song was the first huge hit for sisters Alyson and Amanda Michalka and helped propel the Disney-backed album and the duo into stardom. This album was followed by a Christmas album entitled “Acoustic Hearts of Winter (2006)” and their Sophomore record called “Insomniatic” (July 10, 2007).

A third album was recorded for their Disney label (Hollywood Records) and was to be self-titled 78violet, after their official new name-change. However the album was infinitely delayed, and after parting ways with the label the release of the record was in jeopardy, and still has not surfaced to this day. As such, they had to record a completely new album, which is still on track for release this year. It will be “more mellow and more soulful” and has no less than 18 songs recorded for the album, including titles Suspended, 8 Hours and 53rd Floor.

Song Video of the Day And Lyrics – Dreamdecipher By Miseration Music Video From Mirroring Shadow Album

Christian metal band Miseration rocking out in the Dreamdecipher music video.

Get ready to have your face headbanged off! This song is called “Dreamdecipher” by Swedish Christian deathmetal band “Miseration” and it’s as heavy as they come. Heavy enough to swallow secular bands whole. This song hails off their “Mirroring Shadow” album. Their second full-length from 2009.

I recommend watching the video first and just rocking out without even bothering with trying to understand the lyrics… as the vocals are very hard to decipher (pun not intended) if you are not used to the vocal style of lead singer Christian Älvestam (the only Atheist/Agnostic in the group). And/or well-versed in death metal growls in general. Keep in mind that the words are spoken with blazing-fast speed, so with each sounding grunt you must read a whole word or you’ll get lost fast. ENJOY!

“Let You Down” by P.O.D. from their album Testify is an extremely underrated song with absolutely fantastic lyrics. Some of the lines singer Sonny Sandavol belts out in this song are absolutely awesome.

Just as interesting as the final song, is the demo which was called “New Wave”. New Wave has quite a different sound to it (a little less polished, but not as busy sounding, more simpler) and also contains a few extra lines. This was offered to fans on a special disc for the Testify Special Edition set. Give it a listen!

If you haven’t heard of Phinehas before, you will surely remember their name after watching this incredibly awesome metal video; with an absolutely insane drummer! These guys were discovered by the late Haste the Day, and have proven their headbanging worth after their “The Phinehas EP” made waves when it first dropped in December of 2009. It was a long time coming but they finally have a full album under their belts!

If you’re not into metalcore you may not like what these guys are doing, but regardless you can’t deny that it’s pretty darn awesome. They bring the heavy while also adding lighter tones to their music through clean vocals. Sounds absolutely beast to me. Trying to secure a review copy of this album, so hopefully you can look forward to that soon. :)

Icon For Hire is a girl-fronted band formed in 2007 and signed to Tooth & Nail Records! If you like Flyleaf or Paramore, then you’re sure to enjoy the heavy rock sound and female-powered vocals of this new group.

The following music video is for their song “Get Well” off of their debut album, “Scripted”.

The music video is quite interesting and really well shot, with cool scenes of the lead singer trapped in a room and slow-motion effects that really give it a cinematic quality. You also gotta love the passion that the lead singer, named Ariel, brings to the song. The four-piece also features Shawn Jump on Guitar, Josh Kincheloe on Bass and Adam Kronshagen on Drums. All of them coalesce to bring the house down! I also gotta love those feet-shots… Damn this clean-feet girl foot fetish of mine! :P

Icon For Hire and the super hot lead singer Ariel and her amazing hair! Awesome outfit too. :P

Icon For Hire have certainly got my attention! I really need to check out this album. It’s now on my wishlist! Been quite a while since I listened to a female-fronted band of this style. I’m a big Flyleaf fan. But I’m itching for something new!

Icon For Hire is currently touring with Emery on the “Emery and Friends” tour; which also features fellow labelmates Sent By Ravens and I Am Empire. That tour is wrapping up soon and will end on March 25th. Then the band is going on a HUGE tour with Red, P.O.D. and Brian “Head” Welch (formerly of Korn)! Talk about an amazing lineup! I’d give anything to see that show!

Hounds of Love is a completely different beast from Trollabundin, but it is just as beautiful and mesmerizing. Eivor also shows a grace and power behind her singing that is really unparalleled. It really proves how great she is IMHO.

The song is a cover of a Kate Bush song, of which I am not familiar. I don’t even know who Kate Bush is…. I’ve yet to check out the original, but whether you’ve heard it or not, you are likely to be impressed by Eivor’s take on it. One commenter on youtube pointed out how much of a tragedy it is that Eivor isn’t an award-winner like Adele. I couldn’t agree more!

The Gauntlet by Demon Hunter, lyrics included below, from their Self-titled debut album (2002) is probably one of their most overlooked and underappreciated songs ever. The piece is REALLY unique for the band, as there is nothing else they’ve recorded that is quite like it.

The song is played extremely slow, and is a “ballad” (what the band calls their “slow” songs), but has a kind of menacing quality to it that is very interesting indeed. A sense of depression pervades from beginning to end. Overall it is one of my favorite Demon Hunter tracks, and is one of their longest songs, clocking in at nearly seven minutes. I love the drums at the end, by far my favorite part of the song.

Song Video of the Day: Black Veil Brides – Perfect Weapon

True to their name, the band Black Veil Brides dresses in all black, with goth-style makeup and dress. Contrary to popular belief, they're all guys (used to have a girl drummer who left in 2009)

Perfect Weapon by Black Veil Brides (off their debut album We Stitch These Wounds) is a fantastic song and an even better music video.

Oh yeah, and like what you like. Ignores those who hate what you like. This band has caught a lot of flack for an untold number of reasons (goth dress, emo subject matter, feminine looking guys, monotone sounding singer, et al) but NONE of that matters as long as you like what you hear.
