This is a very sad fact for the Crystal Dynamics-developed, Square Enix published reboot of the franchise, a videogame that promises to rebirth heroine Lara Croft in a very dramatic way; remaking her as a much more realistic, conservatively proportioned, young girl who gets dragged into a hellish situation where she must literally fight, and rely on her reflexes and wit, to survive.
As you can see in this trailer from last year’s E3 2011, Tomb Raider 2012 was looking absolutely incredible, and already seemed like a finished product way back then. The delay should definitely allow Crystal Dynamics enough time however to turn it from an amazing game into a super-polished, must-buy, incredible experience befitting of the queen of gaming.
Here is the trailer that blew our socks off and shot the new Lara Croft into the stratosphere of anticipation.
And that anticipation only grew as Lara Croft graced the cover of Game Informer magazine, and then made a huge splash at E3 2011 in playable form. The gameplay, as you will see below, just looks absolutely brilliant.
Here is what the developers had to say about this sad turn of events. Although we’ll be happy campers come next year!
“When Crystal Dynamics first set out to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise, there were two goals that we were extremely passionate about. The first was to create a modern Tomb Raider game that would surprise and excite gamers. The second was to make this the best game of our careers, something we would be really proud to be a part of. We truly believe that we have something very special on our hands and we can’t wait to share it with you.
Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game. In order to do this, we have decided to move the game’s release date by a few months, from Fall 2012 to the first quarter of 2013.
We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. The game is looking amazing and we can’t wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.”
So look forward to seeing much more new footage of the game in a mere month as E3 2012 approaches! (June 5–7)
