Resident Evil 2 2012 Review. How Does Capcom’s Super Sequel Stack Up Today?

Resident Evil 2 Logo Box Art

The iconic box artwork from Resident Evil 2 featuring a zombie peeking out from a wall.

My 2012 Resident Evil 2 review takes a look at what was once billed as one of gaming’s biggest, most anticipated sequels of all time.

The follow-up to Resident Evil ’96, the original Resident Evil 1 that came out on PlayStation (PS1) a year or so into the height of 32bit glory.

Resident Evil 2 promised to take everything that made the original Resident Evil great and supercharge the package. Larger environments to explore, more new characters, an all-new storyline that would delve deeper into the Resident Evil mythology than ever before, a gigantic quest spanning two discs, two major characters with two minor characters, and four different scenarios to play, even more computer-generated movie scenes to enjoy than the first game (sans the live-action), more voice-clips with better voice acting, eerie new music, all-new enemies to fight, new weapons to unlock, literally HORDES more zombies than the first game, more epic boss battles to take on, all-new city environments and new areas to explore beyond a single mansion environment, and last but not least, tons of extras and unlockables; greatly extending the replayability of the game, including a Ranking system once you beat it.

All of this combined to make Resident Evil 2 the biggest PlayStation game of all time when it came out, selling boatloads of copies.

But how does the game fare in 2012? Read the rest of this review to find out! Read the rest of this entry »

ListenToMePlay Resident Evil 2 Master Run Podcast. Claire Scenario A On Normal

Resident Evil 2 Claire Wallpaper

Listen to me attempt a Master Run on Resident Evil 2. Beat it w/out using a Healing Item!

ListenToMePlay Resident Evil 2 MASTER RUN! All in celebration of Resident Evil 6 releasing on October 2nd!

In this installment of my Resident Evil 2 Podcast series, I tackle Claire’s first Scenario (Claire A) on Normal difficulty attempting to beat it without using a single Healing Item for my Master Run at the game! I will use neither Herbs nor First-Aid Sprays!

A “Master Run” is defined as Mastering the game by performing a feat for you own enjoyment that is difficult in a way that is outside the normal confines of the game. As such, unlockables, rankings or difficulty settings are all a normal and natural part, and must be beaten/tackled in order to consider a game “Complete” (that is, you have “finished” every part of the game). A Master Run however goes beyond that and is a made-up way to make a game artificially harder, more complex, or a self-created feat that few attempt.

For example, you could beat Zelda: Ocarina of Time or a Metroid game with only three Heart Tanks/Energy Tanks. To play the game normally you are supposed to collect these, but by artificially limiting yourself in the health area, the game is made much more difficult. That is an example of a Master Run (per Backloggery dot com) and that is what I’m attempting for Resident Evil 2 by beating it without using a single Health Item!

Originally I was attempting to do this without Saving once as well, but I quickly tossed that idea out of the window… You’d have to be INSANE to attempt THAT!

I am playing the GameCube version of Resident Evil 2 on my Wii.

I’ve “Mastered” two other games so far, I Mastered Resident Evil Remake and Super Mario Land. I hope to add more games to my list soon. :D

ListenToMePlay Resident Evil 2 Podcast. Leon Scenario A On Normal (GameCube)

Resident Evil 2 Wallpaper Cover ArtListenToMePlay Resident Evil 2! In celebration of Resident Evil 6 releasing on October 2nd!

In this first installment of my Resident Evil 2 Podcast series, I tackle Leon’s first Scenario (Leon A) on Normal difficulty and play all the way through the game. There’s also lots of commentary throughout. I am playing the GameCube version of Resident Evil 2 on my Wii.

Next up I’ll be recording a “Master Run” of Resident Evil 2 as I try my hand at beating the game without using a single Healing Herb! I’ll give my self some leniency in the first attempt through by saving often in case I do die.

If I can succeed once, then I’ll play through the other scenarios (there are four total, Leon A, Leon B, Claire A, Claire B) without saving at all OR using an Herb! In order to actually “Master” it, I’ll need to beat all four scenarios without using a single Herb! And I plan on doing so without saving on three of them.

Should be pretty tough! :D But I’m definitely looking forward to it!

Resident Evil Remake 2012 Review. How Does RE1 For GameCube Stack-Up Today? (Wii Version Also Available)

Resident Evil Remake Eye Titlescreen (Game Beaten)Resident Evil Remake ranks among the greatest survival horror games ever made and is a must-play for anyone interested in the remastered origins of the genre.

In my humble opinion, the 2002 GameCube remake of the original Resident Evil ’96 is arguably the pinnacle of the survival horror sub-genre of action adventure games, especially of the old-school survival horror gameplay style that the first Resident Evil 1 established and popularized in the mid-90s.

Resident Evil Remake is a modern game with amazing graphical fidelity (detail in particular) yet sticks to the classic, retro gameplay style of the genre established in the original 1996 Resident Evil 1 game (PS1/Saturn/PC/DS as Deadly Silence version/PSN).

But how does this GameCube remake (also available for Wii) stack up in the year 2012?

Is the game scary? Is Resident Evil Remake still worth playing given the girth of amazing modern masterpieces available for game systems like the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, 3DS and PS Vita?

Should you play the GameCube Resident Evil remake even if you’ve already played the PS1 version? Is Resident Evil Remake the best “classic-style” Resident Evil game or the best in the series? Does the game look good given it’s 10 year-old age and given the extremely detailed high-definition graphics of modern titles? Should you pick up the Wii version or the GameCube version of RE Remake?

Keep reading to find out the answer to all these questions and more! As I take a very in-depth look at one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. :)

Saving
Requires 1 free Block on a GameCube Memory Card (required to play, even if playing the GCN version on Wii). You can only save in five slots per Memory Card (artificial limitations SUCK!). Game does not save automatically, instead you must find an Ink Ribbon and use it at a Type Writer in order to save.
The Wii Version however gives you as many Save Files as will fit, and does not require a GCN Memory Card as the game was built for play specifically on Wii and saves to the Wii’s System Memory or an SD Card.
Rated
M for Mature (Contains Violence and Blood & Gore). The game also includes words like “sh*t”, “damn” and “son of a b*tch”, although cussing is sparse. Even though adult language is in the game, it is not officially rated for “Language” for some odd reason.

No. This game is only available in hardcopy form. A digital re-release is not likely, although may eventually hit other systems at some future date. Most likely for the Nintendo Wii U.
Special Editions
There are no special editions of Resident Evil Remake for GameCube or Wii, although the game was re-released in 2004 for GameCube as part of the “Pure Evil 2-Pack”.
This set included both Resident Evil Remake and Resident Evil 0 (alongside a demo of Resident Evil 4), bundled together for the first time. It contains a new cardboard box holder with unique artwork (featuring Rebecca and Billy from Resident Evil Zero), along with each game in its original case. Both cases then slide into the cardbox box holder, similar to the “Devil May Cry – 5th Anniversary Edition” set for PS2. The “Pure Evil 2-Pack” versions of both games are exactly the same as their prior individual releases.
Both games were then re-released again for GameCube in 2006 as part of the “Resident Evil 10th Anniversary Collection” which included a cardboard box holder featuring Resident Evil 4 artwork. This release bundled Resident Evil Remake and Resident Evil 0 with the full game of Resident Evil 4. All three games are packed in their original GameCube cases but have new yellow borders and are marked as “Player’s Choice” versions.
Both of these re-release compilation packs are rare and fetch a very high price, especially sealed. Only spring for them if you are a collector or manage to come across them in this state for cheap. The Wii version is the best and easiest way to play Resident Evil Remake in its best version for cheap.

Price
As of August 15, 2012, you can get the buy Resident Evil Remake new on Amazon for $60. Average ebay price is about $20 for a used copy. You can buy the Wii Resident Evil Remake (Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil) for $20 new on Amazon. Although the games are cheap now, they will surely go up in price the longer you wait as GameCube games become sparser.

Resident Evil Remake begins much like the original 1996 version of the game, however the live-action movie scenes (including the intro with actual actors) have been replaced by a much-cooler, and much changed, CG intro that is a lot creepier than the original version with less camp. This immediately sets the mood and gives you a good idea of the fear and tone that the game is setting out to establish from the get-go.

The plot of Resident Evil Remake involves a series of grisly murders that have occurred in the forests outside of Raccoon City. There are reports of victims being attacked and eaten by small groups of people. The Raccoon City Police Department sends out two teams to investigate the murders, but the first team, called the Bravo Team, loses contact in the vast forest. Due to these circumstances, the Raccoon City Police Department sends in its elite Alpha team to rescue them and discover the mystery as to what happened to the Bravo Team and the origins of the horrible murders taking place in the forest.

Of course, the rabbit hole goes much deeper than that, and you’ll eventually discover the origins of the T-Virus that has birthed the zombie outbreak, how it intertwines with your group of S.T.A.R.S. operatives, what the Umbrella Corporation has to do with this bad scene, the true intentions of your fellow team members, and the real reason for the Mansion’s existence.

The plot is deep and involved, and Resident Evil Remake takes strides to tie this game to later games in the series, while cleaning up the original script, spoken dialogue and writing to sound more serious in tone, along with a more professional translation… Sadly the voice acting still leaves something to be desired and is not top quality.

Given that, some people still prefer the extremely campy tone and quirky spoken lines of the original Resident Evil ’96, which have been altered, or completely removed, in this version of the game. Read the rest of this entry »

Resident Evil Remake COMPLETED! Review Coming Soon

Resident Evil Remake Zombie Shotgun Screenshot

Resident Evil Remake Completed GET!

So I officially COMPLETED Resident Evil Remake! I am beyond happy about this.

It is one of my favorite games and I’ve been playing it for 10 years ever since it came out in 2002. It remains on my top 5 list, although I can officially say, after playing it so many times over the past couple weeks, that I am DONE with the game.

I am beyond sick of it at this point. But I’m very happy to have reached a literal end, where you have played through all of the modes and unlocked all of the unlockables, at which point you are rewarded with a letter from the developer of the game praising you for playing so much, alongside a gallery of unused costumes and outfits for Jill, Chris and Rebecca.

Review of Resident Evil Remake (and a podcast or two) coming soon!

Followed closely by reviews of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica!

Mastering Resident Evil and Super Mario Land! Master Run FTW!

Resident Evil Remake Giant Snake Boss Yawn Screenshot

Beating Resident Evil Remake without saving once? Seemed impossible but I did it!

Have you ever “Mastered” a game? Mastering Resident Evil and Super Mario Land are my latest videogame Achievements and two of the proudest gaming moments of my life!

What are your proudest gaming moments and have you ever attempted or accomplished a Master Run for one of your favorite videogames?

To “Master” a game, you must achieve a feat that is outside the normal scope of the game. It’s creating a personal challenge for yourself and then accomplishing that challenge.

Two of the most popular example of “Mastering” a game are both for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The first way you can get a “Master” in the game, is to beat the entire game without ever picking up a single Heart Piece or Heart Container! You must keep only three Heart Containers throughout the entirety of the game, which is the amount you start the game with!

As you can imagine, this makes the game incredibly tough and ups the difficulty tenfold. Normally Ocarina of Time is pretty easy, but this Master makes it quite the achievement to pull off. This is beyond the normal scope of the game because playing it normally entails finding hidden Heart Pieces and picking up full Heart Containers to add to your life energy by beating bosses (each defeated boss gives you a full Heart, while collecting four Heart Pieces equals a full Heart).

Another popular way to Master Ocarina of Time is to beat the game without ever using your Sword or other weapons in combat, instead you must use only Deku Sticks!

Before I even knew what “Mastering” a game was, I had heard of CRAZY people doing the above challenges before. Another popular example would be using only the Knife to beat a Resident Evil game.

I was very inspired, thanks to a website called Backloggery, and thought I’d try my hand at seeing how far I could get in Resident Evil Remake without saving once. I had just beaten it on Normal with Jill, so I thought I’d try it on Hard since her quest and how to beat it was still fresh in my head.

Little did I know that I would actually make it through the ENTIRE quest without saving once! I also didn’t use a single First-Aid Spray! I beat Jill’s quest on Hard without saving once or using a first-aid spray, without dying, in a very quick time (for me) of 7:45:23! Only 7 hours! Not tooo shabby!

Honestly, I was pretty sure I’d get about two hours in and then die and never attempt a Master Run again! At the very least, I thought I would surely die at some point when you reach the Hunters!

Here is how I delivered my elation online via Facebook updates as I attempted this incredible feat!

I’m attempting my first ever playthrough of Resident Evil Remake with the intent of beating it without saving once and in the quickest time possible! :O I just beat it with a playtime of 12 hours, 30 minutes. I always forget when I start playing exactly how long the game is. Generally I don’t think I’ve ever beaten it in less than 10 hours. But I’ve never attempted skipping everything and running through to try and beat it as fast as possible. I am positive I can cut that time in half, if not 3, 4, 5 hours or so. Since the ambiance and aesthetic of the game, not to mention the graphics, is so beautiful I still like to play it as slow as possible. Walking everywhere and taking it all in. It’s EXTREMELY tough not to die, but we’ll see how far I can get…. Playing on Hard too, I should add. :P With Jill.

Woohoo! I’m HALFWAY through Jill’s campaign in Resident Evil Remake, attempting to beat it without saving once, AND without using a single First-Aid Spray healing item (they heal you all the way. I do reserve my right to use herbs though, of course! :P), also attempting to beat it as quick as I can. So far SO GOOD. This is arguably the best run I’ve ever had in the game. I’ve done just about everything perfectly, in avoiding enemies, only killing enemies that are required, conserving ammo and conserving health. But I’ve only fought and killed ONE Hunter. *shutters* I got about 12 of the raptor-like killing machines to survive against…. NOT looking forward to it. I hate those damn things!

They are REALLY hard to kill and can kill you in ONE HIT if they leap and strike you if you’re a bit low on health, slicing your head off in one go…. Hopefully I can contain the beasts! I’m doing my best to strategize in my head ways to avoid them, using alternate routes….

I have survived the Sewers and reached Disc 2! Now for the home stretch! All I gotta do is survive the Laboratory and the two end boss fights and I’m home free!

So far everything has gone as well as I could ever hope for. Only one or two near-heart-attack moments. It’s crazy playing this much of Resident Evil Remake without saving ONCE. For the record, in my last playthrough yesterday (which I beat this morning, before attempting my Master-Run right afterward, since it was all still fresh in my head) I saved a total of TWENTY TIMES! This time? ZERO! :D

I literally would’ve thought it impossible to beat the game without ever saving (I typically save after ANY hair-raising moment), but I’ve proven that thought WRONG! Well, almost…. I’ll find out within the hour whether I can mark this experiment a true success or ultimate failure…!

Post #4 – RE Remake MASTER RUN FTW!
Resident Evil Remake MASTERED! Beat it without saving once!
HOLY F’N CRAP! I FREAKIN’ DID IT! I just “MASTERED” Resident Evil Remake! YES! WOO-HOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is without a doubt my proudest gaming moment EVAR! RE Remake is my favorite game of all time, and arguably the game I’ve beaten the
most. I can’t believe I actually did it and successfully pulled this off ON MY FIRST TRY!

I successfully beat the game WITHOUT SAVING ONCE on my FIRST TRY!!!!!!!!! My heart is still pounding out of my chest. On the last boss, I MISSED with the freakin’ Rocket Launcher! :/ (and then he hit me! I was about to die of a heart attack) Also at the part where you have the fuel capsule it will explode if you run or shoot a weapon… OMG…. I got grabbed by an enemy! I panicked and used a Defense Item (knife), and then almost got hit again! I was pretty sure that was the end of me. Was pretty sure my 7 hours I had just sunk into the game was just all for naught. BUT I SURVIVED! :D

I played it on HARD on Jill’s quest and ALSO didn’t use a single First-Aid Spray healing item! I beat the game in 7 hours, 45 minutes and 23 seconds! (7:45:23) I believe that’s my best EVER time. I’m pretty confident I can bump that end time down to 5 hours or so. I had to use the bathroom once while keeping the game on paused, and paused several times to do quick online research (found few answers, I think I’ll post the answers myself on my own websites to fill in this Internet gap on RE Remake! lol), but yeah. WOOT WOOT! I AM WINNAH! MASTERED GET! ^_^

— End posts —

THEN I did more Mastering by finally beating Super Mario Land, after literally MONTHS of trying, without dying or getting hit, keeping the Superball Power-Up (like the Fireball but it ricochets) throughout the entire game!

Suffice it to say, I am immensely proud of both accomplishments and consider them to be among my greatest and proudest gaming moments of all time!

What are your proudest gaming moments and have you ever attempted or accomplished a Master Run for one of your favorite videogames?

All of this was inspired by the AMAZING website Backloggery.com, which I urge you to check out!

Please sign up, create a profile and then add me to your “Multi-tap” (i.e. Friends List).

Backloggery is a website created with the sole purpose of allowing people to easily and effortlessly list every game in their collection for every system, and keep track of what games they are playing currently; with the goal of completing their “Backlog” (ie, the games they mean to play but have yet to play).

You can then update the status of those games as you are playing them, and can mark games as “Unplayed”, “Unfinished”, “Beaten”, Completed” or “Mastered”, among other things (You can even mark games as “Formerly Owned”, “Rented” or “Borrowed/Loaned”).

Because the website has no database, it is effortless to add new games without hitting snags by not typing the name right or hitting a rare game that isn’t in the database, etc. The website does not even have a forum, purposefully, so the focus stays on people’s backlogs and thus the games they are currently playing and the status of their entire collection is always front and center. You are then encouraged to comment on their pages, and you can easily see the status changes or new games that have been added to everyone elses collection on your friends list.

Thus when I changed the status of Super Mario Land and Resident Evil Remake to the elusive “Mastered”, people noticed and commented! :D
Everyone likes to get a little recognition!

One day I noticed that my Backloggery had ZERO Mastered games… that is what inspired me to play through Super Mario Land without getting hit, as a way of Mastering the game, and that in turn lead me to trying my hand at Mastering Resident Evil!

Suffice it to say, now I have the Mastery Bug and can’t wait to come up with new ideas to Master games!

What games have you Mastered?

Summer game time! But is this the last summer for Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3?

It’s that time again, SUMMER GAME TIME!

Summer Game Time (TM :P) is a time when playing videogames is as important as going to your job. Why? Because you MUST FINISH your backlog of games that you never completed all year and from years past, in order to prepare yourself for the absolute ONSLAUGHT of holiday releases; many of which are sequels. If you are to enjoy those sequels to their fullest, then you must finish the games that preceded them in order to catch yourself up on what is happening in said sequels.

So what games are YOU planning on playing before the holiday rush?

Sequels being released this holiday include: Assassin’s Creed III, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Resident Evil 6 (October 2nd), Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (July 31st), Borderlands 2 (September 18th), Pokemon Black and White Version 2 (October 7th), Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time (October 1st), Fable: The Journey (October 9th), Medal of Honor: Warfighter (October 23rd), Far Cry 3 (September 4th), Gears of War: Judgement (2013), Splinter Cell: Blacklist (2013), etc.

E3 2012 Poll: Will Wii U Be the Final Name of Nintendo’s Next-Gen Console? Yes or No

Nintendo Revolution Original Wii Codename

Remember Nintendo Revolution? It was the original codename for Wii… no one thought they’d change it.

Will Wii U be the final name of the Nintendo next-generation console that replaces the original Wii? Yes or no?

Many people find the Wii U name to be confusing and a bit odd. In fact, I had a girl laugh at me just this past week when I was telling her all about Nintendo’s new machine. Do you know what she called it? “The Pee-U” I am not making this up. And despite my attempts at not feeling a little bit “hurt” at this brash mocking, she continued to laugh her head off at the name “p-u”.

Suffice it to say, I am now more convinced than ever that Nintendo should change the name. Many people have stated that the name “3DS”, was a mistake for Sony’s next-gen handheld system, because it is too similar to the former system, and parents and those not “in-the-know” get confused about the difference and will buy games without noticing the “3” in the title. The original DS meanwhile was originally a codename that stood for “Developer’s System” (because the system was easy to develop for and made with giving developers more options than ever in-mind) but sense the acronym dually stood for “Dual Screens” as well, they decided to stick with the name “DS” since it accurately described what the new handheld was (a handheld never meant to originally replace the Game Boy, it was meant to be a “third pillar” and a new line of systems that would continue alongside Game Boy. Everyone but Nintendo new that wouldn’t be the case however :P).

Of course, remember the “Nintendo Revolution” name? Everyone was confident that Nintendo was going to go with that name as the final name for the Wii… but they changed the codename and went with “Wii” instead. And for an entire year all we heard were penis jokes and people remarking “Want to come over and play with me wee” *cue endless giggles*

Yet Nintendo stuck with the name, and now it is an iconic, worldwide, world-known name that cannot be mistaken for anything else and never gets made fun of anymore. For the GameCube, the system was originally called the “Nintendo Dolphin”… a name people loved. That codename was eventually dropped in favor of the even cooler name “GameCube”. I really hope we see a return to a cool name. Although I can live with the Wii U… But it’s such a dorky title…

What do you think?
