…. A Cyberpunk videogame based on the Pen & Paper RPG of 1988 is CD Projekt Red’s next title! Makers of The Witcher!
This is big news for the beloved Polish game developer who has never yet created a non-Witcher title, as their epic Western RPG series comprising The Witcher and The Witcher 2 first started production probably in 2005, as the first game didn’t release until 2007. It’s sequel, The Witcher 2: Assassin’s Of Kings made its debut in 2011 and in between the two releases CD Projekt has done nothing but crank out additional Witcher content, including console versions and the like.

Enter: Cyberpunk. If you haven’t heard of it (like me), it is apparently a very classic and beloved Pen-and-Paper role-playing game in the vein of Dungeons & Dragons (ie D&D), and now a videogame version is coming from CD Projekt, who will developer the new game hand-in-hand with Cyberpunk’s original creator, Mike Pondsmith! Pondsmith appeared on-stage at the CD Projekt Summer Conference to announce the game.
According to Pondsmith, he feels that the experience of the studio’s work on the highly acclaimed Witcher titles have thoroughly convinced him that CD Projekt is the right company to handle development of a videogame version of the Pen & Paper RPG classic “Cyberpunk”. And that they are the best choice to bring his retro game to life.
A second CD Projekt RED (the full name of The Witcher developer) team has been created to work on this game, and the team will be made up of veterans who worked on both Witcher titles.
As for the gameplay itself, the world of Cyberpunk will be non-linear and richly detailed, as well as aimed towards “mature and demanding players”. Gamers will shape the game world of Cyberpunk and have available to them a range of different classes. Each of the many classes will be enhanced via cybernetic implants, as well as featuring high-tech weapons and other abilities that will differentiate them from each other.
While The Witcher was built from the ground up completely from scratch, CD Projekt says that experience will come in handy and tremendously help them to flesh out the game and built the world quicker, without many of the drawbacks and hard-learned lessons that the developer had to swallow when plunging into an epic Western RPG set in an established world, for the first time. And because Cyberpunk already features an established world, that will also tremendously help the developers in building the videogame version.
Cyberpunk will be “brutal when it needs to be”, and you can be sure that the developers will stay true to the source material, especially with Cyberpunk’s creator on-board.
As for the pen-and-paper game, it is still going strong today, most recently updated way back in 2005 with “Cyberpunk Version 3”. Cyberpunk made its debut all the way back in 1988!
A release date or even release window was not given for the title, and it’s unlikely we’ll see actual gameplay at E3 2012 later this week, but we’ll see!
