Pray For Tim Lambesis, As I Lay Dying’s Band Members And Saved Victim And Families Following Christian Meal Lead Singer’s Arrest On Attempted Murder-For-Hire Charge

Me and Friends With Nick Hippa of As I Lay Dying

That’s me in the Demon Hunter shirt with Nick Hippa guitarist for As I Lay Dying.

As you may know, As I Lay Dying lead vocalist Tim Lambesis has been arrested and charged with hiring a hitman to kill his estranged wife. That hit man was an undercover police officer, who was tipped off about the potential murder plot 7 days earlier.

Tim Lambesis was arrested in a Barnes N Noble on May 7th 2013 at 2:00pm on Vista Way in Oceanside, California. He had just returned from touring all over the world including including China, South Korea, Hong Kong, The Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand. The Grammy-winning Christian metal titans were set to tour with Killswitch Engage on May 30th, and As I Lay Dying won Loudwire’s Deathmatch Hall of Fame Award recently, on April 2nd, for getting four consecutive wins when pitted against other bands including Killswitch. All seemed to be looking up… Now this.

Tim Lambesis Signing Guitar As I Lay Dying

Tim Lambesis signing my brother’s guitar as seen in the above pic. It’s also signed by Demon Hunter, Becoming the Archetype, Haste the Day, The Showdown, Living Sacrifice and Norma Jean.

Here is the official As I Lay Dying Police press release from the San Diego Sheriff’s Office:

“Murder for Hire Plot Foiled – Lead Singer for As I Lay Dying Arrested: Tim Lambesis, lead singer and co-founder for the heavy metal band “As I Lay Dying”, was arrested without incident today, May 7 2013 at 2:00pm in a retail business on Vista Way in Oceanside. Lambesis is charged with “Solicitation of Another to Commit Murder.” Information came to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Dept. on May 2nd that Lambesis was soliciting another individual to kill his estranged wife, who resides in Encinitas. The Encinitas Detectives, The San Diego Fugitive Task Force and the Sheriff’s Special Investigation Division investigators immediately initiated an investigation. The investigation culminated this afternoon, when Lambesis solicited an undercover detective to kill his wife. He was then arrested, transported to the Encinitas Station, and booked into the Vista Detention Facility.”

Tim Lambesis With Friend

Tim Lambesis with my friend from the above photo.

Here is the official statement from As I Lay Dying (excluding Tim, naturally), who have not given any more details than this short statement, via label Metal Blade Records.

As I Lay Dying Official Band Statement On Tim’s Arrest:
“To our fans,
As we post this, the legal process is taking its course and we have no more information than you do. There are many unanswered questions, and the situation will become clearer in the coming days and weeks. We’ll keep you informed as best we can. Our thoughts right now are with Tim, his family, and with everyone else affected by this terrible situation – and with our fans, whom we love and draw strength from. Thank you for understanding, and as always, for your support of As I Lay Dying.”
– Jordan Mancino, Nick Hipa, Phil Sgrosso and Josh Gilbert

Nick As I Lay Dying

Once again, this time with Nick. Whom they were squealing over.

Tim Lambesis appeared in court today, May 9th 2013 at 1:30PM for his arraignment, where he will be read his charges of: “Solicitation to Commit Murder” and “Conspiracy To Commit Crime”. Reportedly he will be facing 20 years to life if convicted. Considering that he solicited an undercover cop, it’s expected that he will be fully convicted and found guilty based on the evidence. Of course he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and no specific details are known about the situation.

Tim Lambesis, 32 years of age, married his wife Meggan Murphy in 2004, and she divorced him in September of 2012. Some reports say he wanted the divorce and asked for it, not her. They have three adopted children, ages 4, 8 and 10 (two girls and a boy), from Ethiopia. Tim had said this about his kids in an interview with Loudwire earlier this year, “My kids are adopted and I’ve visited their country – they’re from Ethiopia and that was eye opening to what the world is really like, at least a third of the world. I think that just influences my entire world view even if I’m not necessarily writing a song about humanitarian work, I’m writing a song about what truly makes us happy in life and those types of think that have been influenced by my experiences.”

In the divorce papers filed, his wife describes recent alarming changes in Tim’s behavior and lack of parenting as reasons for the divorce. This included Tim Lambesis becoming “obsessed with body building”, spending “thousands of dollars on tattoos”, and often being distracted by other things when he was supposed to be looking after the kids; including often texting, talking on the phone and napping. He even fell asleep while they were at the beach on one occassion so say the papers. She also stated that his intense touring schedule meant he only spent 10 hours per week with the kids and was gone for months on tour. Although he saw the kids less after they split up and were no longer living together. The couple split amicably and agreed to private mediation to get child custody figured out. She also claimed however that he twice went to visit a girlfriend across the country.

However, as always in these cases, all of this is only one side of the story, and relationships are often complicated and full of issues, especially for someone as busy as Tim. However that is IN NO WAY any excuse for what Tim has now done. Some say he could be suffering from side-effects of steroids and too much protein intake, which can cause “rage” in certain individuals. And Tim buffed up quickly and become obsessed with protein (as he talks about in his workout videos you can see online) and working out. Could that have messed with his head? Or was a lethal cocktail of protein/steroids, touring, stress, legal battles with his ex-wife and the kids, and burnout from constant across the world touring. But who knows, this is all speculation.

I am completely broken apart by this story and my heart is truly wounded. Tim Lambesis, as others have stated, was one of the most down to earth and nicest guys you’d ever meet. And one of the most genuine personalities in metal. This news is shocking, disturbing, and sad beyond belief. Although I am not a HUGE fan of As I Lay Dying, I have been following the band since their debut album Frail Words Collapse, which I listened to online back in the day. That lead me to purchasing Shadows Are Security the day it came out, and I’ve been a fan ever since. I often listen to their songs and videos, although I did not get around to purchasing neither The Powerless Rise, Decas or Awakened (yet). For some odd reason, even though I listened to some of those albums online and several of my friends and brothers raved about The Powerless Rise when it came out. I love all the lyric videos for Awakened and all the songs I’ve heard so far. I remain a fan of the band although I don’t count them among my top favorites (which belongs to Demon Hunter, Becoming the Archetype and The Showdown. Most of my favorite bands are from Solid State, not Metal Blade or any other label and are more blatantly Christian and outspoken in their faith).

But even more than that, I respected and loved Tim Lambesis so much as the frontman and vocalist for the person he is. I saw the band in concert, and met with Tim and Nick outside the tour bus here in Phoenix, Arizona. I got my picture taken with Tim and Nick, Tim signed my brother’s bass guitar and we talked with them and they were very friendly. We were star struck. I feel like I know them after seeing so many interviews, seeing them in person, taking photos with them and watching the DVD documentary for “This Is Who We Are” with all my friends (all of the ones seen in the photos above).

Here are some of my comments in the aftermath of this HORRIBLE tragedy.

Comment #1: Oh no…. Holy crap. Pray that something is amiss here… Tim Lambesis, lead singer of As I Lay Dying, has just been charged and arrested for allegedly putting a hit out on his wife. :( Very, very tragic. Let’s hope his wife is okay, and pray for Tim. He’s gonna need it if this proves out to be true…. I hope to God this isn’t true.

Comment #2: It’s true, here is the official press release from the San Diego Sheriff’s office (website: http://www.sdsheriff.net/). Scroll down and click on “Murder for Hire Plot Foiled (Posted: 5/7/2013 5:00:49 PM)” and the PDF will download. I’ll type it out here I guess:

“Murder for Hire Plot Foiled – Lead Singer for As I Lay Dying Arrested: Tim Lambesis, lead singer and co-founder for the heavy metal band “As I Lay Dying”, was arrested without incident today, May 7 2013 at 2:00pm in a retail business on Vista Way in Oceanside. He was then arrested, transported to the Encinitas Station, and booked into the Vista Detention Facility.”

:( Can’t believe it. So tragic. Pray for everyone involved.

Comment #3: Thank you guys for issuing an official statement. All I hope now is that we will actually hear from Tim himself, and get some kind of explanation. Even if it is true, I want to hear from him, so we can begin the healing process and the process of supporting him through this. In all of this we must not forget the victim as well and Tim’s family. And we must continue to pray for and support the band. I plan on writing Tim in prisonl, and I hope this is a life-changing event for the better. Even though he made the most tragic of mistakes that he can’t come back from, God can and will use this to change him for the better. Darkness took it’s hold this time and he gave into it’s power to destroy and consume. But it won’t win again after he’s done. At least that’s my prayer. All of us can give into that darkness and ruin our lives, people do it all the time. And it’s not rare for great men to fall and give into it. Now all we can do is hope, pray and support Tim and the band. I hope you guys, Nick, Jordan, Phil and Josh will continue the band and find someone to replace Tim. It’s sad, tragic, heartwrenching and will not be the same, since Tim WAS the band. But band’s often replace lead singers. Look at Killswitch Engage. You can come back from this if you desire too. However given the circumstances, I wouldn’t be surprised if any of you never want to play music again following this heartbreaking event. But you have my back and my support if you do. To Tim and the guys, Godspeed. Your true fans are behind you 100%, and Tim we forgive you. You must now pay the piper, but we’ll be rooting for your recovery. You’re in my prayers.

Here is one of the last interviews Tim Lambesis gave before his arrest from February of 2013. Ironically he talks about very dark subjects, including horror movies.

Their newest album, Awakened, was a lot darker than previous albums and a lot more personal. If you listen to it in retrospect, Tim often talks about his demons and a darkside, and some of the lyrics are really prophetic. One of the most prophetic and telling is the song “Cauterize”. It’s main chorus goes like this,

“I’m caught between the feeling. Of being pulled apart. Or stuffed into a cell.” – Wow.

At the bridge things get even deeper down the rabbit hole, when Tim says, “And now I am a patient on the table.” The song goes on to say, speaking to God, “I’ll give you the knife… Cut away as you see fit. Just promise me the patience. To wait for me to heal.” Followed by the chorus again, “I’m caught between the feeling. Of being pulled apart. Or stuffed into a cell.”

*sigh* Pray faithful soldiers. PRAY!

Songs of the Day – There Is A Treason At Sea + Things Of This World (DC Talk Month Closers. Lyrics Included) From Supernatural And Nu Thang Albums

Closing out DC Talk Month are Songs of the Day “There Is A Treason At Sea” from their 1998 album Supernatural and Things of This World from their 1990 album “Nu Thang”. There Is A Treason At Sea is track #14 of 14. Meanwhile Things of This World is track #6 of 11 from their 1990 album “Nu Thang”.

“There Is A Treason At Sea” is an epic spoken-word poem that caps off the Supernatural album epicly. It is an amazing contemporary poem, an amazing metaphor of life and the reality that God is the only one whom is ultimately in control. As such, “There Is A Treason At Sea” is a perfectly fitting close out to DC Talk Month! I hope you enjoyed!

There Is A Treason At Sea DC Talk Song Lyrics

I am solo in this world of water
Only the tip of a sunrise visible
Like the morning light in a little girl’s eyes
I crave this freedom
I find it only in this little ship
Just my soul and its bread and butter
I am comfortable
But there is a reason at sea
Is it me?
It is a wonder, supernatural cover of war
The dark ones who eternal in damnation grow
Set about me now
How they whine and crow
I am solo
In this world of wet
And bitter is my temperament
I close the door to sentiment
And I relish all my youth
I realize that I am doomed
Fear of love and fear of You
But You give me the keys to Paradise
It is You who sympathize
You and Your perfection grow
I am cradled in Your ocean’s throw
I crave your freedom, in this little ship
For You alone can chart my trip
And like these waves, I lose my grip
And I sink into Your arms

————

And closing out DC Talk Month for good is “Things Of This World”. This song is the only part of DC Talk Month hailing from DC Talk’s pre-Free At Last days. This song comes courtesy of the bands 2nd album from 1990 called “Nu Thang” (An album that was preceded by DC Talk’s debut self-titled album in 1989).

The reason I didn’t include much from Nu Thang or self-titled was due to the fact that I am unfamiliar with DC Talk’s material pre-Free At Last, which was the first album I got when I was a kid. For some reason or other I never sought out their previous material. I’ll have to do that now, as I just discovered this INCREDIBLE Nu Thang track called “Things Of This World”.

Just like “Treason At Sea”, Things of This World plays out like a highly intellectual poem that will get you thinking… even though it is, technically, a rap track. It sounds unlike anything else from DC Talk, and is proof once again at how great of a band they were. Enjoy! And hopefully you’ll now be familiar with one of the greatest Christian bands of all time.

Things of This World DC Talk Song Lyrics:

Seventy years is all we got
To accumulate goods that seem to mean a lot
For the first twenty years, you’re off to school
Learnin’ principles and learnin’ the tools
To make lots of money, the ultimate goal
Gain the whole world and yet lose ya soul
Huh, humanism is on a roll

Twenty gets the the knowledge, thirty years to apply
And just twenty years left for askin’ why
I didn’t realize what it was all about
And, was there any use in this rigorous rout because

Things of this world are passin’ away
Here tomorrow, but they’re sure not here to stay
Things of this world are passin’ away
So lay your treasure above
And start to live for Him today

All done for self in this world will pass
And all done for Christ in this world will last
Sounds like a simple task

But everyday life seems to get in the way
No time to serve, barely time to pray
Our focal points lost and we get tossed
In the wind, cold facin’ the cost
Of fallin’ without stallin’ or even callin’ the Lord
While you were blackballin’
He was waitin’ for you to see the light
And find for yourself, these things are trite

Things of this world are passin’ away
Here tomorrow, but they’re sure not here to stay
Things of this world are passin’ away
So lay your treasure above
And start to live for Him today

Our mind transforms a want to a need
A simple process that we call greed
Ya say ya like to have money, well I do too
The problem starts when the money has you
Workin’ overtime to keep up with the pace
A lifestyle that you want to embrace
But it’s two steps from where your needs are met
You’re keepin’ up with the Jones’, but your all in debt
Which will lead to stress, not meeting the bills
While ya sportin’ a Benz with all the thrills
The domino effect’s gotcha life in check
A temporary stitch and ya livin’ a wreck

Things of this world are passin’ away
Here tomorrow, but they’re sure not here to stay
Things of this world are passin’ away
So lay your treasure above
And start to live for Him today

Things of this world are passin’ away
Here tomorrow, but they’re sure not here to stay
Things of this world are passin’ away
So lay your treasure above
And start to live for Him today

Things of this world are passin’ away
Here tomorrow, but they’re sure not here to stay
Things of this world, the things of this world
The things, the things, the things of this world

Don’t lay up your treasures upon this Earth
They’ll soon pass away and all return to dirt
Don’t lay up your treasures upon this Earth
They’ll soon pass away and all return to dirt
Don’t lay up your treasures upon this Earth
They’ll soon pass away and all return to dirt

For those wondering where the DC Talk guys are now, here is what they’ve been up to.

Kevin Max is now the lead singer for Christian rock band veterans Audio Adrenaline (as of 2012) and Michael Tait (the black guy) is now the lead singer for Australian Christian rock titans Newsboys (as of 2009). Finally, Tobymac founded his own record label known as “Gotee Records” and has remained an influential record producer in the Christian music scene to this day.

All three also released their own solo albums. These include: “Empty” (2001) and “Lose This Life” (2003) from Tait (he was also working on a third album called “Loveology” in 2007 but it never came out); “Stereotype Be” (2001), “Between the Fence and the Universe” (2004 EP), “The Imposter” (2005), “Holy Night” (Christmas Album 2005), “The Blood” (2007, which featured DC Talk returning as a group singing the Prince song cover “The Cross”) and “Crashing Gates” (2009 EP) from Kevin Max; Meanwhile TobyMac was also extremely busy and released “Momentum” (2001), “Welcome To Diverse City” (2004. Featured DC Talk returning to sing “Atmosphere”), “Portable Sounds” (2007), “Alive And Transported” (2008), “Tonight” (2010) and “Eye On It” (2012. Only the third Christian album ever to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 charts and the first since 1997). So DC Talk may be only but a memory, but the guys are still alive and well!

About DC Talk Month
March 2013 is dedicated to the Christian rock pioneers DC Talk, arguably my favorite Christian CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) rock band and follows January 2013 which was Demon Hunter Month and February 2013 which was Becoming the Archetype Month. March will feature songs from most of dc Talk’s discography (1992’s Free At Last, 1995’s Jesus Freak, 1998’s Supernatural and 2000’s Intermission) featured daily throughout the month, one a day. Whether you like rock/alternative/hip-hop music, believe in God or not, check these songs out as you may be pleasantly surprised and hopefully you will discover some new-to-your-ears music to enjoy. DC Talk features lots of variety in their tunes, from hard rock to hip-hop to slow ballads that will pull on your heartstrings to singable power pop, so there will most certainly be something you’ll like. Song of the Day – So Help Me God (DC Talk Month. Lyrics Included) From Supernatural Album

Today’s DC Talk Month Song of the Day is “So Help Me God” from their 1995 album Jesus Freak. This song is track #1 of 13.

So Help Me God is the first track from DC Talk’s monumental album “Jesus Freak”, and opens the album quite nicely. In my humble opinion, So Help Me God is the only song from Jesus Freak that sounds like it could’ve been from Free At Last, in that way it transitions well into the rest of the album and kind of acts like a bridge from Free At Last’s hip-hop sound to their more modern rock sound on Jesus Freak. I absolutely love the chorus for this song!

So Help Me God DC Talk Song Lyrics

Hoping, praying, I’ve been waiting
Everybody needs somebody to love
There’s no question, straight from heaven
You’re my angel, I’m so crazy for you

(chorus)
You’re a Godsend
A blessing from above
You’ve been God-sent to me
You’re the Godsend
I’ve been dreaming of
You’re a Godsend

Holding your hand, touching your face
I will love you now and always I swear
I will never forget that first moment we met
When two worlds collided and I found my best friend

(repeat chorus)

(bridge)
I was made for you, you were made for me
In this lonely world, we were meant to be in love

I will never forget that first moment we met
When two worlds, they crashed in
And I found my best friend

(repeat chorus)

Song of the Day – Godsend (DC Talk Month. Lyrics Included) From Supernatural Album

Today’s DC Talk Month Song of the Day is “Godsend” from their 1998 album Supernatural. This song is track #7 of 14.

Godsend is one of the few real romantic songs from DC Talk, a song that is directly talking about a girl yet from a Biblical, Christian perspective. It’s a fantastic song. This song used to be my least favorite DC Talk song… I’m not sure exactly how or why I thought that, maybe cause I never was big on romantic songs… There are a lot of people who love this song and have even used it in their weddings! Enjoy! :)

Godsend DC Talk Song Lyrics

Hoping, praying, I’ve been waiting
Everybody needs somebody to love
There’s no question, straight from heaven
You’re my angel, I’m so crazy for you

(chorus)
You’re a Godsend
A blessing from above
You’ve been God-sent to me
You’re the Godsend
I’ve been dreaming of
You’re a Godsend

Holding your hand, touching your face
I will love you now and always I swear
I will never forget that first moment we met
When two worlds collided and I found my best friend

(repeat chorus)

(bridge)
I was made for you, you were made for me
In this lonely world, we were meant to be in love

I will never forget that first moment we met
When two worlds, they crashed in
And I found my best friend

(repeat chorus)

Here’s a really cool video giving an intimate and behind-the-scenes look at Michael Tait as he sings Godsend. :)

Song of the Day – Socially Acceptable (DC Talk Month. Lyrics Included) From Free At Last Album

Today’s DC Talk Month Song of the Day is “Socially Acceptable” from their 1992 album Free At Last. This song is track #7 of 17.

Socially Acceptable is one of my favorite songs off the Free At Last album, I really like the chorus in this one, and the subject matter is great even today. The music in this song is awesome, and it has a more rock feel than most of the songs from Free At Last. It doesn’t feel that far off from their later material, even though it has the same rap style. The verses in this song are excellent, and hit hard with their content. As with other songs from Free At Last included on Intermission, the latter version is slightly changed over the original.

Socially Acceptable DC Talk Song Lyrics

(it’s ok, it’alright)
(it’s ok, it’alright)

Yea here we
DCT is in the house boy

(it’s ok, it’alright)

What ya thinking? Doing the things you do
Who’s opinion are you listening to?
Justifying, you turn it all to gray
Synchronizing to society’s way

Society is got to be all out whack
And don’t bother with excuses rather white or black
To blame it on a color won’t get a result
Because history reveals to me how ethics are lost
In reality our decency is taking a plunge
“In God We Trust” is an American pun
Funny how it happens so suddenly
Hey yo fellas kick the melody

{CHORUS}
Socially acceptable
It’s ok (is it ok?), it’s alright (is it alright?)
Socially acceptable
It’s ok (is it ok?) in who’s sight? (who’s sight?)
Socially acceptable

Times are changing
With morals in decay
Human rights have made the wrong ok
Something’s missing
And if you’re asking me
I think that something is the “G” “o” “d”

To label wrong or right by the people’s sight
Is like going to a loser to ask advice
About basing your plans on another mans way of living life
It’s creating a brand
Of ethics
Sure to be missing the punch
No count morals that are out to lunch
They’re sliding away because everything is ok
It was taboo back then but today you say what the hey

{CHORUS x2}

Now here we go (here we go), a come on (a come on)
Now here we go (here we go), a come on (a come on)
Now here we go (here we go), a come on (a come on)
Now here we go (here we go), a come on (a come on)
Everybody’s doin it (who’s doin it?)
Everybody’s doin it (yo who’s doin it?)
Everybody’s doin it (who’s doin it?)
Everybody’s doin it (yo yo yo who’s doin it?)
Oooh alright, ooooh ooh

We got to get back to the principles found in the word
A little “G” “o” “d” could be society’s cure
From the state that where we’re in
Because again we’re slippin’
So pray for America because time is tickin’

Socially acceptable
It’s ok (it’s ok?), it’s alright (alright?)
Socially acceptable
It’s ok (ok?) in who’s sight?
Socially acceptable
It’s ok (everybody’s doin’ it), it’s alright (everybody’s doin’ it)
Socially acceptable
It’s ok (it’s ok) in who’s sight? (alright)

Socially acceptable (da ba do da diggity…)
Socially respectable (da da din da…)
Socially acceptable (yeah yeah, yeah yeah….)
Socially respectable

Song of the Day – Like It Love It Need It (DC Talk Month. Lyrics Included) From Jesus Freak Album

Today’s DC Talk Month Song of the Day is “Like It Love It Need It” from their 1995 album Jesus Freak. This song is track #8 of 13.

Like It, Love It, Need It is a head-bobber about the state of the current generation who spends their time complaining and trying to find peace of mind in everything but Jesus. This is such an awesome song, and it holds up extremely well.

Like It Love It Need It DC Talk Song Lyrics

VERSE 1:
Under these circumstances they can hardly cope
Notice their fleeting glances and their lack of hope
I offer this suggestion they don’t seem to care-o
This is my generation drowning in dispair-o

You’ll never find peace of mind in your pool of self
You’ll never find peace of mind in a sea of wealth
You’ll never find peace of mind in your rock and roll
You’ll never find peace of mind if you sell your soul

CHORUS:
You gotta like it, You gotta love it
I know you need some Jesus in your life
You gotta like it, You gotta love it
I know you need some Jesus in your life

VERSE 2:
We circumvent our feelings through an angry sound
He who complains the loudest wears the fattest crown
We’re anti-everybody call it paranoia
Well, I ain’t no judge or jury, but I’m praying for ya

You’ll never find peace of mind in your lucky charm
You’ll never find peace of mind on a hippie farm
You’ll never find peace of mind in a one-night stand
You’ll never find peace of mind in your superman

(Chorus x2)

Bridge/Rap:
Ya dropped right in the middle of a freak attack
Cause we’re back and we’re comin’ like that
Ya see we’re lowerin’ the boom in the middle of the tune
Cause the funk is always heavy where it’s at
So, while you’re whining all the time never changing any minds
It is clear to see your lip has lost it’s button
Cause, if ya take a think at this it is easy to admit
That the selfish way you’re living is for nothing

(Chorus x4)
