Andy Rooney On The Middle East. Utah and Utaq, Mesopotamia and Persia, Iraq Half the Size of Texas, Iran Double the Size of Iraq and Magic Carpets ala Aladdin

Iran and Iraq Size Difference On Map

…… Iraq is MUCH smaller than Iran, as you can see on this map. The huge country adjacent to Iraq is Saudi Arabia.

Utah and Utaq? The late, great Andy Rooney seeks to inform us comedicly regarding “The Middle East”. While this segment isn’t full of stuff you never knew, you will likely learn something new either way. Or at least, something you never thought about This article marks my long-awaited return to my “Andy Rooney On” weekly article series. I’m glad to start doing these again, as I love the insight from someone of his age and experience… someone who lived and grew up in such a different, old-school era than myself (born in the mid 1980s).

Even though I couldn’t disagree more with ol’ Andy regarding Christianity/religion/faith and politics. He being a hardcore, dedicated liberal, me being a Christian Conservative and diehard Republican.

Did you know that Iraq is where the Magic Carpet, ala Aladdin, originated? Did you know the “Middle East” isn’t really in the “middle” of anything? Did you know that Iraq is half the size of the state of Texas in the USA? Did you know that Iran is double the size of Iraq? Thus bigger than Texas… and Saudi Arabia is double the size of Iran!

Iraq Fits Inside Texas. Puzzle Pieces Showing Size On Andy Rooney 60 Minutes Segment

…. Look at that! Iraq fits snugly inside of Texas! I bet you didn’t know it was that small compared to the continental US.

Andy Rooney demonstrates this in fine style by using puzzle pieces cut out in the shape of each country, and showing how Iraq can fit snuggly within Texas. Genius!

Utah Utaq Andy Rooney. Ingenious

Utah and Utaq! Hahahaha. Ingenious.

Did you know Iraq and Iran only have one letter different among their names? I bet you never realized that. It can make things confusing. It would be like having the state of Utah and then the state of “Utaq” here in the U.S. Hahaha. Utah and Utaq, ingenious. In the old days the two countries were completely differentiated from one another because Iran was called “Persia” and Iraq was known as “Mesopotamia”. Which clears things up quite a bit and makes you realize that they are completely different countries.

Given all the talk of Libya regarding the Obama Administration and our U.S. investment, blood and sweat still going into the Middle East from Iran to Iraq to Afghanistan to Pakistan to Libya to Syria to Lebanon to Israel to Palestine and the West Bank…. I thought this Andy Rooney video from the President George W. Bush era was still timely and relevant. How ironic. That.

Andy Rooney On WWII and Covering the 8th Air Force Division During World War II

Andy Rooney WWII Photo. Young Andy During 1942 As a Combat Reporter for Stars and Stripes

Young Andy during 1942 as a WWII Combat Reporter for Stars and Stripes.

The late, great, Andy Rooney on his memories of World War II and covering the 8th Air Force Division as a reporter.

At the age of 90, Andy Rooney reminisces about what he saw, what he heard, the moments he’ll never forget, the people he met, and what it was like for ordinary soldiers, ordinary guys, to fight in the greatest war the world has ever known. This is a very sad, sentimental piece by Andy.

Andy Rooney On Ex Presidents… Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagen, Bush Sr… Obama, Clinton, George W. Bush Together

Obama and Bush Together Official George W. Bush Portrait Unveiling (May 31 2012)

The current and former Presidents (Barack Obama and George W Bush) together.

In this very interesting piece, the late-great, Andy Rooney discusses ex-Presidents, including Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagen and George H.W. Bush, from the vantage point of the Clinton years and Rooney’s liberal viewpoint.

Herrrrrre’s Rooney!

Andy Rooney discusses how Americans remember their ex-Presidents, and how what we read, see and hear about them from media sources shapes our opinion of them. These days, we are actually very lucky, as we see much more of our Presidents than ever before. Every major speech foreign and domestic is readily available to view online, and is often covered in the news media both online, on TV, blogs, and in other sources.

Additionally, we have something that other generations could only dream of… the ability to interact with our Presidents or their official PR people on a daily basis, and see minute-details and news about them via social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and through unique formats like youtube, live-video feeds and chats, virtual Google+ Town Halls, and the like.

….. An amazing picture of former US Presidents in 1991, from left: Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, George HW Bush, Ronald Reagen and Jimmy Carter.

As such, I would reckon that the modern American is much more in tune with what the American President, in this case President Barack Obama, is actually like, than people had in previous decades. And it is only thanks to the amazing advancements in technology that we have made in such a short period.

For example, I was able to quickly and easily watch former President George W. Bush and current President Barack Obama together at Bush’s official portrait unveiling, it was covered in the TV news, posted online at many publications, and was easily found via CSPAN. In the old days, it’d barely get a mention in the newspaper. And very few people would have seen the actual speech, much less in its entirety.

And that should leave us very thankful for the wide variety of information and resources that we have at our fingertips in this day and age.

Andy Rooney On His Critics

Haters Gonna Hate

Haters ALWAYS gonna hate.

In this funny little installment of Andy Rooney On 60 Minutes, the late-great 90-year old Andy answers some of his critics, and general people sending him mail… some of which is negative.

There are some good pointers in this piece about life in general and about being successful. For example, in response to some of the critics and hate-mail Andy received on a daily basis while he was still alive last year, he says that if he ever listened or paid attention to much of it, he would never speak on TV again.

You really MUST avoid people who criticize you and don’t allow them to get to you or stop you from doing what you want to be doing. People are quick to judge and quick to criticize, and will only grow in it the more outspoken you are and the more you put yourself out there and don’t care what people think. That doesn’t mean that you immediately dismiss what other people say, simply acknowledge it, take constructive criticism where you can, and move on. Don’t allow it to linger, as that negative energy does not do you any good. And Lord knows there is much more where that came from, so why pay it much mind?

Andy Rooney On Lists and Magazines

Top 10 Lists Sell

Make anything a “Top 10” and you are surely to get more eyeballs. Lists, lists, lists!

Lists lists lists. Editors discovered a long time ago that if you put something in a list… People will be intrigued enough to read it, even if they normally would not care about the topic. Why?

Because people are naturally more intrigued to simply see what’s on the list, what order its compiled in and how what it contains is listed. Everyone wants to know what was selected as number 1, and what was given last place. Why? Because most people will naturally disagree with the list, and they want to see how the list would compare with their own results.

The Yahoo frontpage and that of many other website homepages is a great example of how this little trick works and works well. People are often so upset with the list and disagree with it so much, that they comment on the article. Thus handing the people who composed the list a double-win. Not only did you take the time out of your busy day to READ the list and increase their numbers and viewership, but you also COMMENTED on their article. Spurring even more discussion and virtually ensuring that the article will be read by even more people (people tend to click on articles with high comment counts, more comments also raises the pages google and search engine ratings, ensuring it gets more exposure).

The moral of the story? Whenever you see lists compiled, especially if its by a publication you disagree with, despise, or think is unworthy to be read, RESIST THE URGE to read the list they’ve made. This can be a hard thing to accomplish, but every little part you do helps. By reading and especially by commenting, even if its a negative comment to tell these people how little they know, you’ve just handed them the victory!

In this funny piece, the late, great, Andy Rooney discusses the magazines of 1996, and how each and every cover seems to be full of nonsensical “lists”, ranging from the “20 Most Fascinating Women Politicians” to “33 Ways To Simplify Your Life” to “Answers to the 10 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Orgasm”.

Admit it… You would’ve picked up and read a few of these if you came across them right? Sad, sad reality… just like “sex sells”, “lists sell” is a new term, and one that is still being implemented on a daily basis throughout the Internets. One reason why IGN started getting so much hate… and yet I’d be willing to bet that their viewership increased…. People love lists…..

Andy Rooney On A Woman U.S. President And Why We Haven’t Had One. Plus, Are Women Smarter and Nicer Than Men? What Countries Have Women Presidents?

Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton

Condi with Hillary…. and Angelina Jolie. Don’t ask. But three of the most powerful woman in the world together!

Why has the United States never had a woman President? Andy Rooney ponders that question in this installment of 60 Minutes, where he goes into some of the reasons why America has never had a female chief executive.

Which, just as Andy says, is quite strange when you really think about it. Considering how many women there are in the US, and the fact that more women vote than men. Andy also talks about the prison population in the United States, and the fact that only 7% of inmates in America are girls or women.

Are women smarter than men are? Are they more capable? Is the average woman better educated than a man? As of 2005, more women did graduate from college than men… Is it because women think that a woman is not capable of leading the country as much as a man is? Why out of 300 million Americans has a women never been chosen for the Presidency?

I find it sad too that Andy Rooney’s liberal philosophy keeps him from naming some of the extremely capable women that would’ve made great Presidents, the top pick for me who has always been Condoleezza Rice (and remains so). Hillary Clinton has also always been the obvious one, but he doesn’t name her either.

So what countries have had woman Presidents? Quite a few actually, more than I thought:

Margeret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister of Britain no less than three times.

Other countries with Woman Presidents As of 2005 Included:
* Argentina
* Iceland
* The Phillipines
* Nicaragua
* Ecuador
* Findland
* Liberia
* Chile
and
Ireland.

And of course, in modern times, Germany’s all-powerful Angelia Merkel.

Here is Andy Rooney on A Woman US President:

What do you think about the Woman President issue, would you ever vote for a Woman President? Who would your choice be right now? Do you think Hillary Clinton would’ve defeated John McCain to succeed George W. Bush if Barack Obama had not stolen the election from her?

Andy Rooney’s Funniest Video – Andy Rooney On Computers, Bill Gates, Off Being On (Start) and Typewriters

I hate computers art. Girl shooting monitor. Do you hate computers?

Many people hate computers for the headaches they cause. Do you?

Andy Rooney’s funniest video is Computers, Bill Gates and Typewriters in my humble opinion. This clip is just absolutely outstanding, hilarious and awesome.

It’s so funny in fact that I went and got my parents immediately after watching it the first time, and they had a rip-roaring laugh in reaction to this priceless 60 Minutes piece. I later showed it to the rest of my family.

The late, great, late 80-year-old Andy Rooney talks about the difficulty of writing on computers, and how that compares to the many, many books he wrote on his 1920s typewriter. He then goes on a hilarious tirade on all the crazy things computers and early Windows Operating Systems require you to do… such as having you “stop” or “turn-off” the computer by clicking… “Start”. Hahahahaha. I love it.

Andy Rooney On eBooks and eReaders… Physical vs digital (Kindle, Nook, etc.)

Andy Rooney ebooks

Andry Rooney loved his books!

What did the late-great Andy Rooney think of the eBook revolution and the end of the book era?

Of course, the eReader has grown immensely popular since Andy’s death, and continues to grow to this day; although Andy passed away only last year, so the 92-year- old got to see a lot of where the modern day-and-age was headed… this from someone who wrote tons of books on a 1920s typewriter!

Thankfully for all of us though, ebooks have yet to replace physical books… and I don’t think they ever will. I think like the various means of getting digital movies, music and videogames, the two can and will coincide together in peaceful harmony, but more and more books will be available digital and some digital-only. Given that it is so much easier, cheaper and more convenient to go digital.

Now check out Andy Rooney on the Kindle, Nook, eReaders and the Digital Book revolution!

Andy Rooney On – Saving, Investing, Money, Finances, Bailouts and the National Debt

US National Debt April 2012

The U.S. National Debt Is Currently 15 trillion (April 2012)

The late, great, Andy Rooney had no shortage of opinions on all subjects under the Sun. When the financial crisis first hit under President George W. Bush during 2008, he did a series of different segments on the financial problems this nation faced.

Funny to realize (actually not) that “financial crisis” and “the economy” and the troubles facing it are still buzzwords, and headline staples many years later in 2012 at the end of President Barack Obama’s first term in office.

Andy Rooney has some advice to give on these situations, from someone who was born before the Great Depression!

In this video Andy Rooney discusses the financial situation and what it all means… Or rather, how most Americans DON’T know what it means and how hard it is for any American, even one as rich as Andy, to even begin to grasp it.

What does Andy Rooney do to pinch pennies and save every dollar he can during this time of economic hardship? Watch this video to find out.

Finally, Andy Rooney discusses the ballooning National Debt itself in this segment.
