Metal Songs of the Day – The Latest And the Last + Grand Finale (Demon Hunter Month. Lyrics Included) From Summer of Darkness and Storm the Gates of Hell Albums (2004, 2007)

The Latest and the Last + Grand Finale brings Demon Hunter Month to a pulverizing close, capping off this epic run of incredible Christian metal with two of my all-time favorite Demon Hunter songs; both of which fitting cap off equally epic albums.

The Latest & the Last is the final song on 2004’s Summer of Darkness, a brutal and awesome ending to Demon Hunter’s sophomore album, whereas Grand Finale is the much more recent capping off of 2007’s incredible fourth album, Storm the Gates of Hell Deluxe Edition; and a perfectly fitting epilogue and tribute to the Second Coming of Christ that is about as good a fit as anyone could come up with to close the book on Demon Hunter month, January 2013. Sit back and enjoy two of the most baddest Christian metal songs ever penned!

The Latest & The Last Lyrics:

Words of high cost
YOU SPIT A CURSE AT MY NAME
When thoughts of hate cross
I CAN’T DEVOUR YOUR BLAME
This is your choice
THIS IS YOUR HAMMER TO CRUSH
I have no voice
YOU’RE NOT THE HAND THAT I TRUST

THROW IT DOWN ON ME
THROW IT DOWN ON ME

Before you break your silence
Before we tear this open
We’ll count the dead and hopeless
For every word unspoken

Thoughts, like blood, run
FOREVER STAINING YOUR HANDS
Mouth like cold gun
BEFORE THE BARREL WE STAND
The latest and the last
YOU PUT A PRICE ON MY HEAD
The latest and the last
THE WORST IS ALREADY SAID

THROW IT DOWN ON ME
THROW IT DOWN ON ME

Before you break your silence
Before we tear this open
We’ll count the dead and hopeless
For every word unspoken
Before you break your silence
Before we tear this open
We’ll count the dead and hopeless
For every word unspoken

Spilling through your teeth
You’re sick of what you’ve seen
You point your guilt at every step we took in loyalty
Spilling through your teeth
You’re sick of what you’ve seen
You point your guilt at every step we took in loyalty

Before you break your silence
Before we tear this open
We’ll count the dead and hopeless
For every word unspoken
Before you break your silence
Before we tear this open
We’ll count the dead and hopeless
For every word unspoken

THROW IT DOWN ON ME

Grand Finale Lyrics

You’ll find me face down, hands bound, ready for the blade to make me two
If judgment falls to meet this ground, that fate will run me through
No day of wrath will see me break for that faithless breath of shame
When the heretics come to make that list, be true to speak my Name

Leave all you see
The curse of man is dead, the hourglass turned on its head
And every care will fade away . . .
(To wake a new day)

Take every throe within us all
The very breath inside our soul
We bleed the life into your hold . . .
The very death of our control

No man can bring a fatal sting and I laugh at the gallows thrall
Just line it tight around my neck, so my words will break that fall
FALL

Leave all you see
The curse of man is dead, the hourglass turned on its head
And every care will fade away . . .
(To wake a new day)

Take every throe within us all
The very breath inside our soul
We bleed the life into your hold . . .
The very death of our control

That final day will fall
And those who curse the sky will face the earth . . .
The many turn to one . . .
The God of Gods own righteous Son
Begging for that second BIRTH!

Take every throe within us all
The very breath inside our soul
We bleed the life into your hold . . .
The very death of our control

Metal Songs of the Day – The Flame That Guides Us Home + Not i (Demon Hunter Month. Lyrics Included) From The Triptych Album (2005)

The Flame That Guides Us Home + Not I by Demon Hunter are the first two opening songs from Demon Hunter’s titanic third full-length album, 2005’s The Triptych.

Carrying on with the double-attack theme are the first two opening songs from 2005’s epic third Demon Hunter album, “The Triptych”. Fans and metalheads alike thought it would be impossible to top 2004’s Summer of Darkness, Demon Hunter’s sophomore album, but the first two tracks from Triptych quickly dispelled that notion and shoved a dagger straight through the heart of anyone who questioned Demon Hunter’s pedigree or ability to top the untoppable. “The Flame That Guides Us Home” is an opening interlude (prologue, if you will) that sets the stage, beautifully, with angelic singing vocals, that leads into the face crushing “Not I”; a powerful non-conformist warcry for those living a life for Christ that brutally dispels any notion that Christians will simply follow in the footsteps of the world. “Not I”. It’s a beautiful and poetic piece of metal mastery that sets the stage for arguably Demon Hunter’s greatest album ever. (Absolutely their best album in my humble opinion).

The Flame That Guides Us Home Lyrics:

Sing now seraph, find the calm within your soul
Bring us closer to the flame that guides us home

Not I Lyrics

So now you’re suffering the fallacy of what you said
When you uncover the depression from where you’ve tread
Breathe over the glass you wrote on
Swallow all that you waste your throat on

You wear the mark and wave the banner they made with sin
Revealing every single lie that you’ve been breeding within
Wash over the skin you’ve broken
Think over the tone you spoke in

So lost in your affliction
The solemn comfort of your grave
If you close your eyes the light can’t take it away

Not I – I won’t conform to what I see in you
Not I – I won’t surrender what I am
Not I – And even if it was a part of me
Not I – I’ll never be that way again

The blind will follow on the path that you created in vain
No guiding light, but just the shadow of the dead will remain
Dig open the pain you’re hiding
Give your hand to the faith you’re fighting
The void you suffer is a curse forever bleeding inside
Now you embrace the fatal sickness you should despise
Remember the day you lost that
Where is the shame that will bring your soul back?

So lost in your addiction
The solemn comfort of your grave
If you close your eyes the light can’t take it away

Not I – I won’t conform to what I see in you
Not I – I won’t surrender what I am
Not I – And even if it was a part of me
Not I – I’ll never be that way again

Reach back behind your pride
And pull the thorn from the burning pain in your side

Sing me a new song
A broken song of redemption and regret
Sing me a new song
And beg for all the mercy you can get

Not I – I won’t conform to what I see in you
Not I – I won’t surrender what I am
Not I – And even if it was a part of me
Not I – I’ll never be that way again

Metal Songs of the Day – Storm the Gates of Hell + Lead Us Home (Demon Hunter Month. Lyrics Included) From Storm the Gates Album (2007)

Storm the Gates of Hell + Lead Us Home by Demon Hunter are the first two opening songs from Demon Hunter’s phenomenal fourth full-length album, 2005’s Storm the Gates of Hell.

These are two songs that lead into each other and are meant to be played back-to-back, to get the full effect of pure and utter obliteration. The opening salvo for 2007’s Storm the Gates of Hell is a hyper-fast, endlessly punishing song that barrels ahead like a fright train and only gives you a moment to breath before plowing through to the end. It’s a powerful song meant to kick off the album in fine fashion, and does so with punishing metal punch. If Storm the Gates of Hell, the opener and title track of the album is a machine gun to the gut, then Lead Them Home is a chaingun to the face, pulverizing your brain to puddy and leaving your eyes bleeding on the street. The opening moments of Lead Us Home is among the most badass openers in Demon Hunter’s history, with one of the most brutal, punishing headbangers ever pressed to plastic. Both songs are extraordinary, and left fans with one hell of a double-team to one of the band’s greatest albums.

Storm the Gates of Hell Lyrics:

Broken teeth, a shattered jaw
Ten to one, behold my God
Wicked sons of Heaven’s loss
Raise your own inverted cross . . .
Kings of earth, iron fist
Serve the sacred you dismissed
Stand before your final day
Choke on every line you pray

Raise your glass to death
Not one second left

Wake the lifeless, die to fight this
Stand beside me, storm the gates of Hell
Wake the lifeless, die to fight this
Stand beside me, storm the gates of Hell
Storm the gates of Hell

Coward’s heart, a serpent’s tongue
Stand to face what you’ve outrun
Fear of death, fear of pain
Bound to all you took in vain
No more lies, no regrets
Sever ties and hollow debt
Open eyes, live to learn
Or watch your blessed temple burn

Raise your glass to death
Not one second left

Wake the lifeless, die to fight this
Stand beside me, storm the gates of Hell
Wake the lifeless, die to fight this
Stand beside me, storm the gates of Hell
Storm the gates of Hell!

Hell hath no fury at all . . . .
Hell hath no fury at all!

Lead Us Home Lyrics

One more day
This time I’ll bite the bullet . . .
Let me stay
And set this life ablaze

Give myself to compromise
And let the hammer fall . . .
From blackened eyes to broken ties
I’ve bled to know them all
Driven to the brink of death
I heed deceptions call
Through bitter tears, forgotten years
I’ve come to sever all

Lead us home . . .
Lead us home . . .
Our tired hearts are failing now, from the inside out
Lead us home

One more time
This day I kill the witness . . .
Take back what’s mine
And give disgrace a name!

Give myself to compromise
And let the hammer fall
From blackened eyes to broken ties
I’ve bled to know them all
Driven to the brink of death
I heed deceptions call
Through bitter tears, forgotten years
I’ve come to sever all

Lead us home . . .
Lead us home . . .
Our tired hearts are failing now, from the inside out
Lead us home

Blessed hands will tear me off
And break me at the wrist . . .
Drag me back to solid ground
Slay the fate I kiss!
OH!

Lead us home . . .
Lead us home . . .
Our tired hearts are failing now, from the inside out
Lead us home

Metal Song of the Day – LifeWar (Demon Hunter Month. Lyrics Included + Music Video) From World Is A Thorn Album (2010)

LifeWar by Demon Hunter is a song from their fifth full-length album, 2010’s The World Is A Thorn.

LifeWar is one THE shortest songs that Demon Hunter has ever composed (“And the Sky Went Red” not discounting) clocking in at a measly one minute and 51 seconds. But it’s just-under-two-minutes of absolute awesome, from beginning to end. The song starts off with a bang, features a military-style drum-roll that plays throughout, and features amazing lyrics that take one from birth through middle age, in very cool circle of life-style. Despite the short length, LifeWar is among my favorite Demon Hunter songs ever, proving that short & sweet often takes the cake.

Lyrics:

LifeWar
Born from the fire clean, crawling through the dirt like WAR.
5 years, my mother gave a voice for WAR.
10, I was dead, born again with eyes for WAR.
By 15, hate was the name of my WAR.

Wash me in the river, give me to the pain of LifeWar.
LifeWar.
Life…

20 years gone, and father told me life was like WAR.
Hands to the bone, 25 years of WAR.
30, I wake to the sound of souls at WAR.
I will pass through, buried with the flag of my WAR.

Wash me in the river, give me to the pain of LifeWar.

Song of the Day – Dead Flowers (Demon Hunter Month. Lyrics Included + Acoustic Video) From True Defiance Album (2012)

Dead Flowers by Demon Hunter is a song from their sixth full-length album, 2012’s True Defiance.

Dead Flowers may arguably be the best ballad that Demon Hunter has created since My Throat Is An Open Grave, it is a song that has a feel similar to that of Carry Me Down from Storm the Gates of Hell. It’s a true song that will have you singing the lyrics throughout, with an outstanding chorus. I don’t know why it is, but I didn’t care for Dead Flowers when I first heard it, but it has grown on me and is now considered one of my favorite songs on the album. I also love the title of the song, and the name “Dead Flowers” has so many different connotations and meanings one can glean from the title alone. Dead Flowers is the final song on the normal version of the True Defiance album, and a fitting closer.

Lyrics:

I feel ashamed with abandon in my heart and on my face
I suffered the blame
I would show to you this way
But I’m too late

When the sorrow, it breaks them
I will replace them
For you

Dead flowers for the torn apart
Laid at the grave to heal a broken heart
Let it rain it rain until it floods
Let the sun breathe life once more
Reborn

Wish you the same
To walk beside and carry on this flame
To see you again
With a radiance
of pure and holy name
When the sorrow, it breaks them
I will replace them
For you

Dead flowers for the torn apart
Laid at the grave to heal a broken heart
Let it rain it rain until it floods
Let the sun breathe life once more
Reborn

Dead flowers for the torn apart
Laid at the grave to heal a broken heart
Let it rain it rain until it floods
Let the sun breathe life once more
Reborn

Dead flowers for the torn apart [x3]

Let it rain it rain until it floods
Let the sun breathe life once more
Reborn

Dead flowers for the torn apart [x6]

——-

Just as incredible is the acoustic video of Dead Flowers, which is only available via youtube, where Demon Hunter played it at an exclusive acoustic show (as far as I know anyhow). This version of the song is awesome, and the song really lends itself to an acoustic version.

Here is an additional treat, as lead singer Ryan Clark talks about the meaning behind the song “Dead Flowers”.

Song of the Day – Blood In the Tears (Demon Hunter Month. Lyrics Included + Acoustic Video) From World Is A Thorn Album (2010)

Blood In the Tears by Demon Hunter is a song from their fifth full-length album, 2010’s The World Is A Thorn.

Blood in the Tears marks the final track on the regular edition of 2010’s The World Is A Thorn, Demon Hunter’s fifth full-length album, and is a criminally overlooked slower, but not too slow, ballad from the band. I love the feel of this song, which has a harsh tone to it while also remaining hopeful. It straddles an interesting line, as it talks about having love for your enemies and praying for them to know the pain of Christ suffering for them, just as they want to bring pain on others. This song also is interesting musically, it’s definitely not metal, but it sounds very different from their previous slower songs. It even uses autotune, and yet places it in the perfect spot to elevate the song.

Lyrics:

Don’t come on quietly when you draw near
Don’t go on lightly
Don’t leave me here
I wither quickly in winter’s cold, but carry onward like I was told

And I wait for a sign

Like blood in the tears of all my enemies (So they will see)
Knowing the pain the way they should
Blood in the tears of all my enemies (Given to me)
Leaving a trail to where you stood

And when it’s quite, when you can hear, I beg you take me away from here

Cleansing red, wake the dead

——-

Even better than the normal version of the song is the Acoustic version of Blood in the Tears by Demon Hunter, available exclusively as a video on the Deluxe Edition of The World Is A Thorn. It’s absolutely fantastic!

Worship Song of the Day – I Am A Stone (Demon Hunter Month. Lyrics Included) From True Defiance Album (2012)

I Am A Stone by Demon Hunter is the final song from their sixth full-length album, 2012’s True Defiance Deluxe Edition. Capping the special edition version of the album off extremely nicely with a true worship song.

I Am A Stone from Demon Hunter’s 2012 album, True Defiance, stretches the vocal abilities of the band in ways never imagined before, with a virtual A-Cappella performance by lead singer Ryan Clark that is a true thing of beauty. I Am A Stone is a bonus song on the Deluxe Edition of True Defiance (along with the extra song What Is Left, another slower tune) that is worth the price of admission alone. The song is that amazing. It is also another worship song, following in the tradition of Thorns (Storm the Gates of Hell) and Driving Nails (World Is A Thorn). This song gives me tears everytime I hear it, it truly is a phenomenal song.

Lyrics:

It’s Hard to Say
That I’m Back
On a Straight Line

You See My Path
Is In Fact
Just A Fall Line

It’s In My Blood, It’s In My Lungs
And It Won’t Die

I Fight These Words, I Bite My Tongue
So I Don’t Lie

Though It’s Me to Blame
There is No More Shame in Me
In Me…

I Just Feel the Same
Immune to All This Pain
And the Scars Don’t Write a Song for Me At All…

I Am a Stone, Unaffected
Rain Hell Down Onto Me
Flesh and Bone, Unaffected
Your Fool I Will Not Be

I Am a Stone, Unaffected
(I Am a Stone)
Rain Hell Down Onto Me
Flesh and Bone, Unaffected
(I Am a Stone)
Your Fool I Will Not Be

I Try to See and Believe
In the Short Side
Accept the Burn of A Vein
And A Half-Life

And How You Rest Your Faith in These for a Lifetime
That Hollow Lie Against My Hope That I Won’t Buy

Though It’s Me to Blame
There is No More Shame in Me
In Me…

I Just Feel the Same
Immune to You Say
And the Scars Don’t Write a Song for Me At All…
No Your Tears Won’t Line A Path for me to Crawl

I Am a Stone, Unaffected
Rain Hell Down Onto Me
Flesh and Bone, Unaffected
Your Fool I Will Not Be

I Am a Stone, Unaffected
(I Am a Stone)
Rain Hell Down Onto Me
Flesh and Bone, Unaffected
(I Am a Stone)
Your Fool I Will Not Be

The Waters Rise Above My Eyes
I Will Breathe It In and Go Out With the Tide
And When You Think This is The End
You Will Find Me There Where I Have Always Been

I Am a Stone, Unaffected
Rain Hell Down Onto Me
Flesh and Bone, Unaffected
Your Fool I Will Not Be

I Am a Stone, Unaffected
Rain Hell Down Onto Me
Flesh and Bone, Unaffected
Your Fool I Will Not Be

I Am a Stone, Unaffected
(I Am a Stone)
Rain Hell Down Onto Me
Flesh and Bone, Unaffected
(I Am a Stone)
Your Fool I Will Not Be

I Am a Stone…
I Am a Stone
